Criminal Investigation Department (CID)
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based at Force Headquarters provides support and specialist services in the pursuit of Force and local Crime and Disorder Strategies, targeted at the investigation, prevention and reduction of crime, as well as providing direction and guidance to the Force in the development and implementation of crime related strategies.
The range of specialist services available within the Department are many and varied and consist of dedicated teams of Detectives trained and equipped to undertake proactive and protracted criminal investigations (Organised Crime Unit, Special Branch) to Detectives and support staff who provide reactive support for major investigations and volume crime activity (Major Crime Team, Economic Crime Unit, Vulnerability Unit, Scientific Support Unit and Public Protection Unit).
In addition, the Headquarters Force Intelligence Unit consists of Police and support staff responsible for the co-ordination and dissemination of intelligence which directs operational activity at Divisional, Headquarters and Regional levels in the pursuit of tasking and co-ordination processes practiced within the National Intelligence Model. The Force Intelligence Unit also provides support and guidance in the authorisation and handling of covert policing activity, encorporating a Force Authorisations Unit in the short term.
