Staff Induction
Durham Constabulary has a comprehensive induction process for all new staff, which is broken down into four stages:
- Pre-read (Induction Booklet)
- Central Induction (1 day at Headquarters)
- Local Induction (over a period of several weeks at your place of work)
- Structured Course (at Headquarters)
The overall aims of our induction procedure are to:
- Integrate new staff into the organisation
- Provide new staff with access to the resources they require to perform their job efficiently and effectively within a short timeframe
- Inform new staff of Force expectations in relation to quality of service issues and required standards of service delivery to the community and colleagues
- Provide support to enable new members of staff to:
- Understand their role within the organisation with particular reference to 'Aiming for Excellence' and Durham Constablulary's vision and values
- Contribute effectively to the success of the organisation (including, where relevant, the highlighting of relevant good practice from previous employment)
- Understand policies, processes and procedures, structures and standards
- Develop a positive attitude to their work and Durham Constabulary
- Be aware of their legal responsibilities, including those relating to the public, colleagues and to health and safety
- Establish good practice with regard to their continual professional development in particular Durham Constabulary’s Performance Development Review Process (PDR)
- Promote and develop an understanding of, and commitment to, respect for diversity
- Enhance staff retention within Durham Constabulary.
The induction booklet (stage 1 of the induction process) may be downloaded from this page. It provides an overview of some of the issues which staff coming into the organisation should be familiar with. Many of the subjects contained within it are covered again, in more detail, later on in the induction process. It is important that new staff take the time to read the booklet before attending the central induction stage of the process.
