South Area - Barnard Castle

Neighbourhood Profile

Barnard Castle

Our patch stretches over 300 square miles with the historic market town of Barnard Castle at its centre. Additionally, we police 35 villages and hamlets stretching from the edge of Weardale down to North Yorkshire, and from the Cumbrian border in the west, across to the start of the Unitary Authority of Darlington.

Whilst the five response teams police the district around the clock, the neighbourhood team works flexible shifts to best target and problem solve emerging complaints. The neighbourhood team has a dedicated sergeant, three beat police officers and five PCSO's. They each have geographical responsibility to help build good local links and to provide reassurance and familiarity. The team has an additional support staff member who enhances our efforts by concentrating on our neighbourhood watch schemes and our nationally recognised Farm Watch. Two Special Constables have also worked with us to provide extra dedicated patrols and visibility.

Priorities

  • Target under age drinking by embedding Bottle Watch at Evenwood, Toft Hill and Etherley
  • Teesdale District Council to problem solve and design out illegal parking and driving on town centre cobbles during market days.
  • Teesdale Police to focus on Barnard Castle ‘Night time economy’ over the festive period to reduce potential alcohol related harm.

Your Neighbourhood Inspector

Your Neighbourhood Inspector I am Inspector Kevin Tuck. I and my officers within the neighbourhood policing team are responsible for the rural district of Teesdale. We cover the whole of the dale excluding Evenwood, Toft Hill, Etherley and Hamsterley which are policed by officers from Bishop Auckland for geographical and response reasons.

In the latest yearly performance results Teesdale achieved a 40% detection rate for all offences and a 20% fall in crime the best in the force. This success was formally recognised by Chief Constable Jon Stoddart who awarded the team a special commendation.
