North Area - Stanley
Neighbourhood Profile
Centred on a hill top between Chester-le-Street and Consett Stanley it is the second largest town of Derwentside after Consett and lies south west of Gateshead.
Stanley used to be divided into three, the main town of Stanley and the mining villages of East Stanley and South Stanley. However, with the expansion of all three they have blended into one town and East and South Stanley are no longer officially used town names (although they are recognised colloquially). The village of South Moor was historically referred to as West Stanley.
The Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) focuses closely upon crime and disorder issues and is underpinned by the activities of the Derwentside Community Safety Partnership.
In addition to these forums, a neighbourhood management scheme exists within the area and is known as "The Stanley Green Corridor" scheme. This is one of a small number of government pathfinder initiatives and centres upon the areas of Southmoor, South Stanley and Craghead, all of which figure highly in the national index of multiple deprivation. The purpose of the scheme is to identify, implement and evaluate innovative approaches to local problem solving within identifiable communities.
