About Neighbourhood Policing

Neighbourhood policing is about having the 'right people, in the right place, in the right numbers, in order to create neighbourhoods that are safe and feel safe'.

Durham Constabulary has been successfully delivering neighbourhood policing in the form of community beat teams for many years now. Initially through our patrol strategy we sought to provide intelligence-led targeted resources, and geographic ownership of areas. This has been further supplemented by our current Streetsafe initiaitive where we have been harnessing the energies of our communities and partners to address crime and the fear of crime, anti social behaviour, and those quality of life issues that contribute to making people feel vulnerable.

More recently the internal force restructure via the introduction of community inspectors enhanced our position even further. Our force vision outlines that we will deliver community focused policing; we will be responsive to community needs and inspire confidence in local policing; and we will be led by intelligence and deliver results through partnership and teamwork. We are seeking to develop our neighbourhood policing teams further through integration with other neighbourhood service providers, and also more effective engagement with communities and partners. Indeed the North Area has been our 'pathfinder' in this regard. Every force in the country has a 'pathfinder' BCU.

Over the next two years through the Neighbourhood Policing Project Board we will develop further our approach to neighbourhood policing throughout County Durham and Darlington.
